Our host, Prestwich poet Tony Walsh, Longfella, has been a winner and finalist in many of the biggest poetry slams in Britain and Ireland. He’s represented the UK at Poetry Slam events in Warsaw and Berlin and compered slams at some of the UK’s premier poetry events. Tony’s local Vocabaret nights have seen packed houses and standing ovations.
Tony has flicked through his poetic Little Black Book and invited twelve (twelve!) of the North West’s leading slam poets - many of them Slam Champions in their own right - to compete for the catchily titled Prestwich Book Festival North-West All-Star Poetry Slam. This will be an All Killer/No Filler line-up of performance poets who regularly perform around the UK and beyond, at festivals like Glastonbury and the Edinburgh Fringe, on television and radio, and everywhere from The Lowry to… Heaton Park Sports and Social Club!
With judges awarding marks out of 10 for Written Content, Performance Style and Audience Reaction it’s YOUR job to clap, stamp, shout and cheer your favourite poet to victory. Expect a wide-range of styles plus belly-laughs aplenty; but which poets will switch the mood and go straight for your heart-strings? (Warning: side effects of Slam Poetry are known to include laughter, weeping and jaws locked in the open position. If symptoms persist consult your pharmacist.)
Leave your inhibitions and ALL your pre-conceptions at the door. With plenty of chance to re-fuel at the bar and Longfella at the helm, a bloody good Friday night out is guaranteed. Trust us! Book the babysitters, tell your friends; this is one event you will NOT want to miss.
Friday 31 May, Heaton Park Sports and Social, 315 Bury Old Road, Prestwich M25 IJA. 7.30pm. Get tickets here.
