Eat A Book at Aumbry

Actor Julie Hesmondhalgh
"There was a loaf of butter on a leaf, the bread was on a board; there was a dish of lemons and there were wooden mills for black pepper and grey pepper and the salt; the china was eighteenth century Moustier and the wine stood, undecanted, in a row of thick green cool unlabelled bottles. ... Presently Julius struck a match and set fire to the next course. The flames, fed by rosemary and fennel, crackled, aromatic, invisible almost in the brilliant air."
The novel A Legacy by Sybille Bedford is a forgotten classic of the twentieth century - it starts as French Catholic aristocrat Julius marries Melissa, daughter of German Jewish business people, in 1890s Europe, and traces the relationship between their families in the run up to the First World War. Not only does the novel evoke a long lost world of fabulous and decadent wealth, it also contains a lot of amazing food.
For one special night only, the talented chefs at acclaimed Prestwich restaurant Aumbry are recreating some of the dishes from the book into a sensational four course menu. What's more, Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh ("Hayley Cropper") will read excerpts from the book as you eat. There will be a special raffle on the night with proceeds going to the Royal Manchester Childrens' Hospital.
